History
Cillien is the adopted son of Baroness Gwenolie Estrelaint and a lecturer in Saint Endalim's Scholasticate's faculty of magical studies. When the baroness lost her husband and son in the Dragonsong war, she traveled outside the frigid walls of Ishgard to cope with the grief of her loss. During her travels, she happens upon an abandoned hyur infant in an alley in Limsa Lominsa. Taking pity on the child and still reeling for the loss of her own, she took in the orphan and named him Cillien. Despite the stigma of adoption (and even moreso, one of a different race) within Ishgardian high society, Lady Gwenolie doted on Cillien and treated him like her own flesh and blood.As customary of a highborn upbringing, Cillien was enrolled into Saint Endalim's Scholasticate for his education. He ended up focusing on magical studies after his capacity for spellweaving was discovered. It was here where he met his would-be mentor, Lord Aibertain Valeriant, then lecturer of a fledging field of study called "modern magical theories". He studied under Lord Valeriant's tutelage and would later be considered his only protégé.It was also around this time that Cillien discovered his penchant for unravelling mysteries. After encountering signs of heretical activity within the Scholasticate, he conducted a personal investigation on the matter and discovered that his mentor was conspiring with heretics.After graduating from his studies, in the aftermath of the Dragonsong war, Cillien went on a journey to find out why Lord Valeriant decided to ally himself with heretics. During his pilgrimage, he learns of the inconvenient truths surrounding the war; about the injustices committed by his Ishgardian forefathers against the dragons and the Archbishop's lies and machinations which mired the nation in ignorance. This changed something in Cillien and filled him with a new purpose in life.Upon returning to Ishgard, he loans an obscene amount of gil and uses it to purchase the position of lecturer for modern magical theories. Normally his knowledge and talent would be enough to get the role, yet the halls of the Scholasticate was steeped in prejudice. There was no way a hyur can get a teaching position in the Scholasticate through conventional means. Despite this, Cillien wishes to honor his mentor's legacy and teach future generations the lessons imparted to him by Lord Valeriant.It's not all sunshine and rainbows though. The massive debt he incurred casts a great shadow over his future. In order to gather the funds he needs to pay his dues, Cillien offers his talents and services to the Scholasticate and Ishgard as a whole. Many recognize his talent for deduction and mystery solving so he's mostly solicited for investigative jobs.

Counterspell ExpertInstead on focusing on casting flashy and explosive spells, Cillien's magical expertise focuses on the analysis of the inner workings of spells. When one knows how a spell works, then a countermeasure can be devised against it. The more time Cillien is allowed to observe and study a spell, the greater the chance that he will discover a way to counter or nullify it.He also has access to the most basic of spells from conjury, thaumaturgy and arcanima. If allowed time and resources, he can perform grander spells.
